International Students

Launceston Grammar is located in northern Tasmania in the City of Launceston. Voted Australia’s most family-friendly city, Launceston is renowned as a warm and welcoming city with a diverse, multicultural population of over 105 000 people.

One of Australia’s oldest cities, Launceston was founded in 1806 and has one of the best-preserved early cityscapes in Australia and century-old parks and gardens, excellent restaurants and cafés, and popular cultural and sporting precincts. It is a safe and easy place to get around, with many areas accessible by walking.

Launceston Grammar values the breadth of cultural experience that international students bring to the School. We are keen to continue the growing number of international students who, during their time at Launceston Grammar, have achieved both academic success and personal growth including Class of 2019 student, Henry Wu.

International students have access to our diverse Academic programmes, with an extensive number of subjects offered in the TCE (Tasmanian Certificate of Education). Many exciting co-curricular activities are available, from music to art, tennis, horse-riding, table tennis and many more.

You will find modern facilities, spacious grounds and teachers who nurture and inspire every student to achieve their personal best. The relationships and memories formed during their time at Launceston Grammar will remain with each student long after graduation.

Our international student support services include:

  • A dedicated International Student Coordinator who liaises closely with the teaching, pastoral and boarding staff to help students with academic support, student growth and school expectations;
  • A personalised and focused delivery of the English as an Additional Language programme;
  • An Individualised Orientation programme over 10 weeks; and
  • Assistance for students in preparing to be involved in sports, activities, outdoor education, community service and university planning.

International Student Enrolment Process

Launceston Grammar has limited availability for International Student boarding applications.

Criteria for Enrolment

Applications from International Students are assessed and considered on the basis of:

  • the number of positions available at the appropriate year level.
  • the resources of the School.
  • the student’s academic records and English language proficiency level for the proposed course of study.
  • English language proficiency is determined by the result of a test undertaken in their country by an approved English Language Assessment organisation.
English Proficiency

International students require an adequate command of English so that they can manage the curriculum in mainstream classes.

A condition of enrolment is that a student undertakes a formal English Language Assessment upon application for admission to Launceston Grammar. This can be carried out in the country of origin through the Australian Education Assessment Services (www.aeas.com.au) or another official English assessment organisation.

Students may be required to undertake intensive English language study prior to their entry to mainstream study. Launceston Grammar partners with Avalon College’s full time boarding ELICOS program to assist with this process.

Launceston Grammar students study in mainstream English classes and receive limited ESL (English as a Second Language) tuition from a specialist teacher who works with individuals or small groups on specific needs.

Application Process

Please contact our Enrolments Office at enrolments@lcgs.tas.edu.au to receive an Application for Enrolment form.

It is important to note that lodgement of the Application for Enrolment form is not an Offer of Enrolment or notice of acceptance.

Launceston Grammar will assess the application including evaluation of reports and of English Language proficiency. The Head of Enrolments and School Principal will make the final decision on the acceptance of students to the School.

The enrolment process will commence with a Letter of Offer of place made in writing by the Principal and this will be accompanied by a Fee Invoice.

Acceptance of Enrolment is made by completion of the relevant forms and payment of the Enrolment Confirmation Fee, one half year’s tuition and fees plus boarding fees for the same period.

Upon receipt of the Acceptance of Enrolment and payment, an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment certificate (eCoE) will be issued for application of Student Visa 500.
